What will the food grade hose be used for?

What do you need to transfer? The answer will guide your choice. A food grade hose is a multipurpose piece of equipment that is commonly used by food and beverage manufacturing businesses. Different varieties and sizes of food grade hoses are used in other industries, too. A food grade hose can be used for the following:

  • Liquid food grade hoses are ideal for carrying “wet” food such as alcohol, oil, dairy products and the like in a sterile environment to protect your product throughout its journey.
  • Certain types of food grade hose are specifically for transferring dry foods, such as cereal, flour, sugar and spices, keeping them free from contaminants while in transit.
  • Some hose types are great for use in motor homes and caravans as a means for safely carrying the drinking water.
  • Specific sizes of food grade hose are suitable for use in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries.

Once you have identified what your food grade hose will be used for, you can narrow down your choices based on size, material and the suitability of the hose for your processing and transport operations.

Check the food grade hose is industry compliant

There are certain rules on good manufacturing practice (GMP) for the groups of materials that come into contact with food. Therefore, when you are choosing your food grade hose, make sure the model is compliant with industry standards and requirements. A food grade hose has to be made from non-toxic materials to ensure no harmful chemicals transfer to the food or liquids it will come into contact with. Similarly, no substances should affect the taste or quality of the product. For example, our hygienic liquid food grade hoses are phthalate and BPA-free. Look out for the food industry compatibility marking symbol of a glass and a fork.

What size of food grade hose do you need?

Food grade hoses are available in different weights, lengths and diameters to accommodate the different types of foodstuff moving through the hoses. For example, if you are transferring beverages look out for an internal diameter of around 19mm (3/4”).

Note the different types of materials

Food grade hoses sometimes use stainless steel fittings. It is important to avoid other types of metal fittings and components. This will prevent the risk of metal corrosion that could potentially contaminate the dry or wet food in the hose.

Our range of liquid food grade hoses include designs where the hose is made from an oil-resistant synthetic rubber called nitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR). This is a premium grade rubber suitable for use in the food and beverage industry because it is odourless. We also use polyvinyl chloride (PVC) because it is lightweight and can withstand a range of temperatures.

Another versatile material is polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). This withstands a range of extreme temperatures, too. Polyurethane is also used because it is more suitable for transferring fatty foods as well as abrasive foods, such as spices and other dry ingredients.
